Some people have problems emptying the bladder. They may be unable to empty the bladder completely, or they may not be able to get any urine out at all.
Bladder emptying problems may have different causes:
Poor muscle coordination
Bladder emptying problems may be due to poor coordination between the bladder and the sphincter muscle. If the sphincter contracts at the same time as the bladder, there will be problems emptying.
Resistance
Problems can also be due to an overly strong resistance in the urethra, for example, if the prostate becomes enlarged and squeezes the urethra shut. Strictures, or narrowed areas, in the urethra may have the same effect.
Injuries
Problems emptying the bladder can also happen because of an injury in the nerve connections from the spinal cord to the bladder or damage to the bladder itself.
