Underlying causes
Common underlying causes of these problems are:
- Spina bifida
- Spinal cord injuries
- Cerebral palsy injuries
- Multiple sclerosis
- Tumors
- Diabetes
Some operations may also result in difficulties urinating, and in men, enlargement of the prostate can have the same effect.
Where feasible, doctors will try to treat the underlying causes. However, a cure is not always possible, especially if the nervous system is damaged.
