In 1985 I had a hysterectomy and I have had bladder problems ever since. I had a bladder neck elevation and various procedures to “stretch” the bladder, subsequently, years of misery followed. I was unable to retain much urine and my life was dictated by visits to the toilet.
My hobbies of ballroom dancing and gardening were seriously affected. It was often too painful to bend down to the flowerbeds and dance classes were very difficult.
Recently, I went into hospital for a mastectomy and during my stay in hospital, I could not pass urine so I was catheterized at intervals by the nurse.
Two days after coming home, I went into complete retention and my husband rushed me into the ER. The Consultant Urologist wanted to teach me CIC, but I felt unable to cope with that, plus the post-mastectomy pain and impaired mobility. It was agreed I should have an indwelling catheter for two weeks until things settled down, with the agreement that this was only a temporary measure.
Two weeks later I felt much better and went back to hospital. I was apprehensive about CIC but trusted the Urology Nurse Specialist who was helping me with my problem. I spent a whole day in the hospital and found it very difficult to pass urine because of my anxiety.
Various positions were tried, usually with the aid of a mirror. I was determined to succeed and thought I would not be able to use a mirror in a convenient place while away from home so I tried to do without it.
After 4 pm I left the hospital and my first attempt at home was a complete success, I have never looked back since!
No more pain, no more wetness, no more life being governed by visits to the toilet. No more distended abdomen and restricted lifestyle. What a transformation! I have nothing but praise for the hospital and staff for their confidence in me.
