Children who have suffered damage to their spinal cords can sometimes have reduced fine motor ability or general motor ability, as well as reduced perception. That is why you need to adapt the environment and CIC equipment to your child's conditions.

It is important to sit steadily and securely. Your child's hands should be free to assist in the CIC procedure. You must always allow enough time to complete the procedure, so that time-pressure will not force your child to give up. The routine should be clear to the child, as well as his/her delegated task.
Remember that mom and dad should be in a comfortable position as well during the procedure.

In the long-term goal of your child being able to go to the toilet and empty his/her bladder completely on their own using CIC, there are other steps to practice such as getting dressed/undressed.  By practicing these different steps, the overall process becomes easier.
